Which B2B Content Marketing Statistics Hold Up in 2026?

October 21, 2026
B2B content marketing statistics checked at source: buyer research, AI use, personas, thought leadership and budgets, each dated, sized and scoped for 2026.
Which B2B Content Marketing Statistics Hold Up in 2026?

The B2B content marketing statistics that hold up in 2026 come from a short list of dated studies. They range from the Content Marketing Institute's survey of 1,015 B2B marketers to Forrester's survey of nearly 18,000 business buyers. We re-read every figure below on the publisher's own page on 19 October 2026.

So which numbers can you put in a budget deck? Why do four surveys give four answers to "how many buyers use AI"? And what happens to a number when its publisher releases a second report?

Keep reading. The disagreements are the useful part.

Key takeaways:

  • The latest full CMI B2B report we could find is its 2026 edition, fielded in summer 2025.
  • Buyers decide in big groups, and most have a short list before they talk to a seller.
  • The share of buyers using AI runs from 45% to 94%, depending on who was asked and how.
  • Every figure names its publisher and sample, and we label research from companies that sell to marketers.

Which B2B content marketing statistics are current?

The current B2B content marketing statistics come from the latest editions in the table below. The newest full CMI B2B report we could find, as of 19 October 2026, is B2B Content and Marketing Trends: Insights for 2026, published on 8 October 2025. We'll swap the figures when a newer edition lands.

G2, 6sense, TrustRadius and Salesforce all sell products to the marketers who read their research, and Storyblok sponsored CMI's survey. That doesn't make the numbers wrong. It means you should know who's asking.

Forrester's and Gartner's full reports are gated, so their figures come from their own releases and summaries.

This page is the B2B slice of our audit of 350 widely quoted stats. The method and failed claims are in the hub.

How do B2B buyers research and decide?

B2B buyers research and decide in large groups, and the vendor they choose is usually on their shortlist before they talk to a seller. Forrester's survey puts the typical purchase at 13 internal stakeholders and nine external influencers, and 94% of buyers in groups of six or more report clear benefits from the size.

Four stat cards from 6sense's 2025 report: first contact at 61% of the journey, 95% of surveyed buyers said the vendor they chose was on their Day One shortlist, buyers started 79% of first engagements, 94% ranked the shortlist

The 6sense study found buyers first contact sellers 61% of the way through the journey, down from 69% in 2024. Surveyed buyers said the vendor they chose was already on their Day One shortlist in 95% of purchases. They also said they started 79% of first engagements, and 94% ranked that shortlist before they spoke to sellers.

TrustRadius sees the same pattern: 79% of technology buyers had already heard of the product they bought, and 83% shortlisted three or fewer products, averaging 2.7. Gartner adds that 67% of B2B buyers prefer a rep-free experience, and a second Gartner release puts 70% in favor of a completely digital, self-service purchase.

What it means for you: buyers reach sellers with a short list already formed, so your content's job is to be on it.

How many B2B buyers use AI?

Reported AI use among B2B buyers runs from 45% to 94%, and the spread likely comes from differences in sample, wording and timing, not from one survey being wrong. Each row below is the figure as the publisher worded it.

Bar chart: 45% of B2B buyers used AI in a recent purchase in Gartner's survey, 63% at any point in TrustRadius's, and 94% in both Forrester's and 6sense's
SurveyWho was askedAI figure
ForresterNearly 18,000 business buyers94% used AI during the buying process
6senseNearly 4,000 B2B buyers94% used LLMs in the buying process
TrustRadius1,862 technology buyers63% used AI at any point
Gartner646 B2B buyers45% used AI during a recent purchase

Our read: the gaps likely reflect who was asked and how (global buyers across industries, technology buyers, one recent purchase), and none of the publishers explains the difference. Pick the survey that matches your buyer, and name it.

Buyers check what AI tells them.

Of the TrustRadius buyers who used AI, 94% fact-checked it at least some of the time, and 72% did so very often or always. In a May release, which counts 645 buyers where the March release says 646, Gartner found that 69% prefer to validate AI-generated insights with sales reps, and buyers split on who misleads them more: 51% said GenAI and 49% said a sales rep. For purchases that include genAI features, Forrester found the buying group doubles to 14 members from seven.

G2 published twice this year, and you should read both.

In April, 51% of software buyers said they start research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google, up from 29% in April 2025, and 69% chose a different vendor than planned after chatbot guidance (1,076 buyers, March 2026). The July report (1,038 buyers, June 2026) ranked review sites first for shortlist influence at 38%, just ahead of AI chatbots at 37%. That one-point gap doesn't show a real shift, and the April figures measure different behaviors, so treat the two reports as separate snapshots.

If you track how often chatbots name you, start with how AI citations and mentions differ.

Do personas and personalization still matter?

Personalization is common in B2B but basic, and the one buyer-side survey we found favors tailoring to the buying group over the individual. Among CMI's respondents, 89% of B2B marketers personalize content, but 59% of them call it basic, meaning one or two channels with minimal integration. CMI also found that 51% use neither account-based marketing nor account-based experience.

Data is the usual bottleneck. In the same CMI survey, 91% collect first-party data, yet half rate their first-party data strategy as exploratory (19%) or developing (31%). Salesforce's worldwide survey of 4,450 marketing decision makers, not limited to B2B, found that 84% admit to running generic campaigns.

One of the few buyer-side surveys on personalization with a stated sample is Gartner's, with 632 B2B buyers. Gartner reports a 20% positive impact on consensus for content relevant to the buying group, and a 59% negative impact for content aimed at the individual. The release doesn't define the metric, and the data is from August to September 2024, so treat it as a direction, not a forecast.

We didn't find an independent survey that sets the right number of buyer personas, so treat any "ideal number" as opinion. If you're mapping personas to search, our guide to persona keywords in B2B SEO starts from the buyer's query.

Does thought leadership change buyer attitudes?

Thought leadership makes B2B decision-makers more receptive, by their own account, though these are stated intentions, not observed behavior.

Bar chart: among U.S. hidden decision-makers, 95% said strong thought leadership makes them more receptive to outreach, 71% have little or no interaction with sales, 71% rate it more effective than conventional marketing, 64% trust it over product sheets

The Edelman and LinkedIn 2025 thought leadership report surveyed 1,934 business executives on LinkedIn and labels its charts U.S. It focused on hidden buyers, the people who influence a purchase without being its main users. Among U.S. hidden decision-makers, 95% said strong thought leadership makes them more receptive to sales and marketing outreach, and 71% said they meet sales reps never, rarely or occasionally.

Both groups said it beats standard collateral. Of U.S. target decision-makers, 73% said thought leadership is more effective than conventional marketing at showing a vendor's value, and 71% of hidden ones agreed. As a trust source for judging a vendor's capabilities, 65% of target and 64% of hidden decision-makers rated it above marketing materials and product sheets.

Expert participation remains limited in many organizations. CMI found that 96% of B2B marketers say their organization creates thought leadership, but 37% say fewer than 5% of the employees with specialized expertise contribute. Edelman is a communications firm and LinkedIn sells B2B advertising, so read the results as one side of the market.

Do B2B teams have content strategies?

Yes, 97% of CMI's B2B respondents say they have a content strategy, but only 12% rate their marketing highly effective. CMI reports both numbers in its 2026 B2B report, and 47% more call it somewhat effective, so 59% say it was at least somewhat effective. That's having a strategy, not a documented one.

The strategy itself is improving. Among marketers with a strategy, 61% say its effectiveness improved over the past year, and 74% of those credit strategy refinement. Teams whose efforts were effective credit content relevance and quality (65%), alignment with sales (45%) and customer understanding and segmentation (40%).

If sales alignment is your gap, content and sales coordination is the place to start.

The leading reported challenges are creating content that prompts a desired action (40%), resource constraints (39%) and measuring content effectiveness (33%). Only 20% named understanding their audience's informational needs as a top challenge, and 15% named aligning with sales objectives.

What are B2B marketing budgets doing?

Marketing budgets remain constrained, with little spending growth and mixed movement in their share of revenue. Two good surveys also disagree on the level, likely because they sampled different people.

Two stat cards: Gartner's survey of 401 CMOs and marketing leaders put marketing budgets at 7.8% of revenue in 2026, and The CMO Survey of 308 U.S. marketing leaders put them at 9.0%

Gartner's 2026 CMO Spend Survey of 401 CMOs and other marketing leaders in North America, the UK and Europe, mostly at companies with over $1 billion in revenue, put budgets at 7.8% of revenue in 2026, up from 7.7%. In the same survey, 56% said they lack the budget to deliver their 2026 strategy.

The CMO Survey from Duke's Fuqua School of Business polled 308 U.S. marketing leaders and reported budgets of 9.0% of company revenue, with spending growth of 1.7% and training budgets at 3.8% of marketing spend. Neither survey is B2B-only, so don't quote either as a B2B benchmark.

CMI's B2B respondents also reported their plans. Asked for the top three areas they plan to increase in 2026, they named AI-powered tools most often (45%), ahead of events and experiential marketing (33%) and owned media (32%), while human resources came last at 9%. If you're defending content spend, our B2B content ROI framework ties the budget line to pipeline.

Which B2B stats are easy to misquote?

B2B stats get misquoted when a newer edition replaces them, when a one-point gap is read as a reversal, or when no original source exists. Three examples from this page:

  • 6sense's 69% first-contact point is 2024 data, and the 2025 report puts it at 61%, so cite the newer edition.
  • G2's July ranking of 38% for review sites against 37% for AI chatbots is a one-point gap, so it doesn't show a shift. April's 51% and 69% measure different behaviors, so don't set them beside it.
  • "73% of B2B marketers have a documented content strategy" has no original source we could find. CMI's 2026 report says 97% have a strategy, which is a different measure.

Five checks before you cite a B2B stat

Check five things before you put a B2B number in a deck, because most of the errors we found came from skipping them:

  1. Who collected the data, as opposed to who published the roundup?
  2. Which edition is it, and has the publisher released a newer one?
  3. Who was asked, and how many? Look for B2B only versus all marketers, one country or one platform.
  4. Does the publisher sell something the finding supports?
  5. Does your sentence claim more than the source says?

The same checks sit behind our 40 SEO statistics page. Checking takes minutes, and a retraction costs far more. If you'd rather talk through what these buyer numbers mean for your pipeline, book a founder call.

FAQs

How many B2B marketers have a content strategy?

97% of CMI's B2B respondents say they have a content strategy, and 3% don't, according to CMI's 2026 report on 1,015 B2B marketers surveyed in summer 2025. CMI's wording is "have a content strategy", not "have a documented one".

How many B2B buyers use AI in the buying process?

Reported AI use among B2B buyers runs from 45% to 94%, depending on the survey. That's 45% in Gartner's recent-purchase question, 63% in TrustRadius and 94% in both Forrester and 6sense. Name the survey and its wording when you cite the figure.

How many buyer personas should you have?

We didn't find an independent study that sets an ideal number, so treat any specific count as opinion. Gartner's buying-group data points to building content around the group, and we'd check each persona against real sales conversations.

Is CMI's 2026 B2B report the latest edition?

CMI's 2026 report is the latest full B2B edition we could find as of 19 October 2026. CMI published B2B Content and Marketing Trends: Insights for 2026 on 8 October 2025, and its research page lists nothing newer. We recheck when CMI publishes its next report.

Why do survey numbers on the same topic differ?

Surveys differ in who they ask, when they ask and how they word the question. AI use of 45% versus 94% and budgets of 7.8% versus 9.0% of revenue both come from credible studies with different samples.
