AI search study · October 2026

YouTube is a Google AI source

Google's AI Overviews cite a YouTube video in nearly a third of answers. ChatGPT cited none. The videos that get cited mostly come from creators, not the brands being discussed.

Almost every YouTube citation comes from Google

Share of answers that cite at least one YouTube URL, by engine. AI Overviews and AI Mode account for 525 of the 529 answers that cite YouTube.

Retrieval

ChatGPT and Perplexity rarely find YouTube at all

Both engines search the web before they answer, and we keep what they retrieved as well as what they cited. YouTube almost never comes back in their searches, and when it does, they seldom use it.

Two panels. ChatGPT: 4 of 27,261 search results were YouTube pages across 1,358 answers, and none were cited. Perplexity: 1 of 8 YouTube pages it retrieved made it into the answer, 13% against 56% for other sites. Two panels. Shorts

About 1 in 11 cited videos is a Short

Of 867 YouTube video citations, 79 were Shorts and 788 were regular videos. We checked every video ID against YouTube directly, so Shorts shared as ordinary watch links are counted too.

Every cited Short came from Google: 70 of 699 video citations in AI Overviews and 9 of 164 in AI Mode. 61 of the 529 answers that cite YouTube include at least one Short.

Whose videos

AI answers cite creators talking about a market, not the brands selling in it.

Base: 867 YouTube video citations. Channels were matched to the brand and its tracked competitors by name and domain. Examples leave out the baskets of current Tenpoint clients.

Video formats

Rankings and how-tos get most of the citations

We sorted cited videos by the wording of their titles. Videos that rank or compare products, and videos that explain how to do something, make up 59% of YouTube citations.

Examples come from baskets that aren't current Tenpoint clients. Click a title to open the video on YouTube.

Where it shows up

YouTube shows up at every stage of the buying journey

The rate barely moves between early research and late-stage questions, or between answers that mention the brand and answers that don't.

Google shows more video than it cites. Above many AI Overviews, Google also shows a separate block of YouTube videos. Count that block too, and the share of AI Overviews with YouTube rises from 31% to 35% (450 of 1,276 answers). The figures in this report count only the AI answer's own sources.

What to do

A YouTube plan for AI search

Treat YouTube as a Google play

It earns citations in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, and almost nowhere else. If your buyers search on Google, it belongs in the plan. For ChatGPT and Perplexity, put the effort into web pages.

Get on other people's channels

97% of cited videos come from creators and reviewers. Find the channels that rank tools in your category, and give them demo access, data and a reason to include you.

Make the formats that get cited

Rankings, comparisons and how-tos earn 59% of citations. Title videos with the question your buyer asks, such as "best X for Y" or "how to do Z".

Start with regular videos

Shorts are about 1 in 11 citations. They're worth cutting from longer videos, but long-form is what Google cites most.

Check which videos Google cites for your prompts

The 867 citations went to 680 different videos, and the most-cited video appeared in only 7 answers. No video has a lock on a topic, so a new, well-titled video can earn its place quickly.

Method

How we measured it

Sample

6,684 AI answers: the latest run of each prompt basket Tenpoint Labs tracks, collected 8 to 27 October 2026. The baskets cover B2B software, services, consumer and home brands, all asked in English from the US.

Engines

ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity. Each prompt was asked once per engine.

What counts as a citation

A YouTube URL in the answer's own list of sources. For Perplexity, only the sources the answer text points to. Google's separate video block is counted only in the note above.

Shorts

Every distinct video ID (1,496 across all runs) was checked against YouTube's Shorts address. A Short loads there; a regular video redirects to the watch page.

Video formats

Sorted by keywords in the title. It's a rough grouping: 41% of citations fall outside the two named formats.

Limits

One snapshot per basket, not a trend. Brand and competitor baskets differ in size and topic, and a few busy topics carry more weight. Engines that show video without listing it as a source aren't counted.
