Your Google Keyword Position Checker Is Measuring the Wrong Thing

Any google keyword position checker will hand you a number in about four seconds, and the number will be roughly right. That's the easy part, and it's been solved for a decade.
So why do two tools give you different answers for the same keyword? And why does the number keep improving in quarters when traffic doesn't move?

How can I check rankings for free?
You can check keyword rankings for free in three ways, and each one suits a different job.
A free rank checker answers a one-off question. You type a domain and a keyword, and you get a position. Seobility, Semrush and Ahrefs all run one without a paywall, though Seobility caps you at five checks a day, and for a single spot check they're perfectly good. What they can't do is watch a keyword over time or tell you why a number moved.
Google Search Console is the better tool for anything ongoing, and it's free for any property you can verify. It reports average position, impressions and clicks for queries your site genuinely appeared for, which is a different and more grounded dataset than a tool guessing at a national ranking. A manual incognito search is the sanity check. It's slow and it doesn't scale, but when a number looks wrong, looking at the page yourself is the fastest way to find out why. You'll often discover the answer isn't a ranking problem at all.

Why do two rank trackers disagree?
Two rank trackers disagree because they measure different things and call both of them position.
Location. Google localises heavily. A tracker checking from a Virginia data centre and a tracker checking from London will report different results for the same query, and neither is lying.
Personalisation and history. Your own browser knows you. Incognito reduces the effect without removing it, which is why checking your own rankings by hand tends to flatter you.
Device. Mobile and desktop SERPs differ in layout and sometimes in order. A tool defaulting to desktop reports a world half your buyers don't see.
Timing. Trackers sample. If yours crawls on Tuesday and you look on Thursday, you're reading Tuesday's SERP. Google also tests result orders, so a single sample can catch a position that never really existed.
Absolute against average. This one causes the most arguments. A rank tracker reports one sampled absolute position. Search Console reports an average across every impression, so a page sitting at two in three cities and forty in the rest reports something in between that matches neither.
The r/SEO thread arguing that Search Console alone is bad advice for rank tracking makes the sharper version of this case: Search Console position counts search elements, not pixels. Google's documentation states that an AI Overview occupies a single position and every link inside it inherits that position, while ads occupy no position at all. So the number describes element order rather than where your listing physically sits on the screen. That's a real limitation, and it cuts both ways. An older small-scale study by Marie Haynes, run across ten sites in 2018, found Search Console position accuracy varied widely, from roughly four in ten keywords within one position on a local-intent site to eight in ten on a national ecommerce site. Her conclusion was that the data is reasonably accurate for some sites and never perfect, and that sites whose rankings vary city to city are where it drifts furthest.
Treat the tracker as a sharp reading of one moment and Search Console as a blurry reading of every moment. You need both, and you shouldn't expect them to agree.
Will rank tracking data get more expensive?
Rank tracking data has already got more expensive twice in twelve months. Two Google changes raised what it costs a tool to collect the numbers, and that cost reaches you as pricing, refresh rates and coverage.
The first was the removal of the num=100 parameter in September 2025. That parameter let a tool read one hundred results in a single request. Semrush said losing it raised its operational costs tenfold.
The second arrived on 26 August 2026, when Google confirmed it had begun routing search result links through a google.com/goto redirect. The destination sits encoded inside the Google link rather than written into the page, so a tool can follow a link but can't read where it points. Google described it as a technical measure against evolving forms of abuse. Derek Perkins of the rank tracking company Nozzle reported near total rollout across several residential IP providers, and put the cost of resolving every link across a five-page ranking at 500 to 1,000 requests where one request used to do the job.
Neither change touched how Google ranks anything, and searchers land on the same pages they always did. What changed is the economics of watching it happen, and the two changes stack rather than replace each other.
You'll feel it indirectly. A tool absorbing that much extra cost can raise prices, sample less often, cover fewer locations, or crawl less deeply. Most will pick some blend, and the blend is rarely on the pricing page. When your tracker's numbers get noisier next year, the cause may sit upstream of the vendor entirely.
None of it touches Search Console, which Google gives you free for your own property. That's the practical case for the reporting shift below: the measurement you own is getting cheaper relative to the measurement you rent.
What is a good keyword ranking?
A good keyword ranking in 2026 depends on what sits above you on the page rather than on the position number by itself.
Position three used to mean three results down a list of ten blue links. Today an organic third place can sit under an AI Overview, a People Also Ask box and a video carousel, with an ad block above all of them that doesn't count toward the position number at all. The number didn't change. The screen above it did.
The numbers track the same shift, with the decline coinciding with wider AI Overview exposure on informational searches and product widgets on commercial ones. GrowthSRC draws that attribution itself, though a year-over-year portfolio comparison shows association rather than proving cause. GrowthSRC pulled Search Console data from its own client portfolio, 30-plus ecommerce, SaaS, B2B and EdTech sites across more than 200,000 keywords, using around 74,000 top-ten keywords for the click-through comparison, and found position one click-through rate fell from 28% to 19% between 2024 and 2025, with position two falling from 20.83% to 12.60%. Read the rest of that table before panicking, though: the average decline across positions one to five was closer to a fifth, and positions six to ten went up.
Ahrefs reached a similar conclusion from a different angle. Its February 2026 re-run of a 300,000 keyword study found the presence of an AI Overview correlated with a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking desktop result, up from 34.5% when the same method ran in April 2025, measured against what that result would have earned had AI Overviews never rolled out.

What a google keyword position checker cannot tell you
A google keyword position checker cannot tell you whether the position it reports still earns any attention, and no tool vendor has much incentive to raise it.
We pulled ninety days of our own Search Console data and split it by query length. Conversational queries of six words or more, the ones phrased like sentences rather than keywords, made up about a third of our distinct queries. They ranked at an impression-weighted average position of 26.7, against 41.8 for queries of four words or fewer. Their combined click-through rate across those ninety days was zero.
Before reading too much into the zero, note what 26.7 means: page three. Neither set of queries ranks anywhere near click-earning territory, so a click-through rate of nothing is the ordinary outcome and proves very little by itself. Two further caveats, said plainly. That's one B2B site's window, offered as a worked example rather than an industry study. And long conversational queries carry very few impressions each, so a combined zero across that set is a small-denominator result as much as a behavioural one.
The gap is the part to sit with. Those conversational queries rank fifteen places above the short-keyword rows and keep earning impressions, which means the pages are being surfaced against questions we never targeted. Run the same split on your own property before you believe any of it. The method takes about twenty minutes: export your queries, filter to six words or more, and compare average position and impressions against your short-keyword rows.
The broader point holds regardless of what any one site's data says. When someone asks an AI surface a question, the answer arrives assembled from pages the reader never opens. Your page can appear in or inform that answer without producing a visit, and that visibility increasingly has to be measured separately from clicks. Position and visibility used to be close enough to the same measurement that nobody separated them. They've come apart, and a position checker only ever knew how to measure one of them.
That's also why the distinction between GEO, SEO and AEO stopped being pedantry. They optimise for different surfaces, and a position number means something different on each of them.
What should you report instead?
Report cluster-level position trend and citation signals instead of a list of single-keyword positions. Keep the position data underneath, and stop leading with it.
The shift is from a list of positions to a picture of coverage. A cluster climbing from an average of thirty to an average of twelve across forty related queries tells you something a single keyword at position four never could, and it's much harder to fool yourself with.
The last two rows deserve care, because they answer different questions and get conflated constantly. A standard Search Console impression means a link to your page was shown to a person, not that an AI system retrieved or used it. What a conversational impression tells you is that you're visible for question-shaped demand, which is worth reporting on its own terms rather than as a failing keyword.

They're rolling out to a subset of sites, so you may not have the view yet, but it's the instrument that actually answers the question the query-length proxy only gestures at. When is paying for a tracker right?
Paying for a rank tracker is right whenever you need competitor positions, a large keyword set, or defensible daily numbers for somebody else.
Buy a paid rank tracker when you're reporting to clients and need defensible daily numbers across many domains. Buy one when you're monitoring competitor positions rather than your own, since Search Console can't see anyone else's property. Buy one when you're tracking hundreds or thousands of keywords, where manual checking stops being possible. Buy one when location matters, because multi-location and local businesses need city-level readings that an average will flatten into nonsense. And buy one when volatility itself is the signal you're watching for.
Skip it when you own one site, track a few dozen keywords, and mostly need to know whether the trend is up. Search Console does that job for free, and the money is better spent on the pages themselves.
